It was in 1967 that a number of talented Renfrewshire singers decided to form a choir called the "New Paisley Singers". The attempt almost fell flat on its face when only four men turned up for the launch but the day was saved when the ladies decided to go it alone and form their own ensemble. In 1974 the choir changed its name to "The Gleniffer Singers" and one of its earliest engagements was to appear that year as the group of singing nuns in the Johnstone Phoenix Group's production of "The Sound of Music".
Since that time there have been many notable occurences in the choir's history including the partnership established with the Sonor Chorus from Gladaxe in Denmark, with both choirs visiting each other's countries to give a series of guest concerts. The Gleniffer Singers returned to Denmark a second time to sing at Sonor's 50th anniversary celebrations. Later, at their own 25th anniversary celebrations, the Gleniffer Singers were honoured by a Civic Reception in Paisley Town Hall followed by a Silver Jubilee Concert in the same venue. More recently the choir celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a celebratory dinner and annual concert in 2008. Twice during its history the choir has represented Scotland at the prestigious Royal International Music Festival (Eisteddfod) which is held annually in LLangollen, North Wales. The choir has also beebn successful in other competitions, as mentioned below.
